I first read this book when I was too young to understand it, but couldn’t resist falling in love with Lennie. When I came back to the novel years later, I was drawn to the complexity of his friend George and the sadness that permeates their trip. I tried to capture this in my illustration. They're together but unable to communicate; tender but powerless to change their fate.
